Regina Pat Canadians pick up second win at Western Regionals

The Regina Pat Canadians were up against the host, Kenora Thistles, in the second game of the under-18 AAA Western Regionals, and the Queen City kids came away with a 5-0 victory.

The Regina Pat Canadians were up against the host Kenora Thistles in the second game of the under-18 AAA Western Regionals and the Queen City kids came away with a 5-0 victory.

The Pat Canadians entered the contest 1-0 while the Thistles were 0-1 and needed a win to remain in contention for the final.

The Pat Canadians came out flying, directing 20 shots on the Kenora goal in the opening period. Regina wouldn’t find the scoresheet until the midpoint of the period when Maddox Schultz scored his second of the tournament on the powerplay to give Regina a 1-0 lead.

The Pats' dominance was rewarded late in the period. Nathan Gardiner scored with just over a minute left in the frame to give Regina a 2-0 lead through 20 minutes.

In the second period, the Pat Canadians continued to pour on the pressure despite having to kill off a pair of Thistles power plays. After the successful penalty kills, Regina hit the scoresheet twice more. Ryan Ulmer and Cash Lanigan each scored their second goals of the tournament to double Regina’s lead to 4-0 through 40 minutes. On the shot clock, the Pat Canadians continued to dominate Kenora, Regina outshot the Thistles 27-9 in the period for an overall lead on the shot clock of 47-15.

The Pat Canadians were too much to handle for the hosts as Regina scored for a third time on the man advantage early in the third period to round out the scoring.

In the third period, Regina outshot Kenora 13-5 for a final shot total of 60-20 in favour of the Pat Canadians. Regina’s special teams were 3-for-4 on the powerplay and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.

2-0 Regina will round out the round-robin on Saturday against 1-1 Thunder Bay.
