REGINA - With the latest Crime Severity Index (CSI) numbers now out, Regina Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) is reporting an increase of one per cent over the 2022 total.

Statistics Canada released the CSI report on July 25 for municipalities and provinces across Canada for 2023.

Regina Police Service is reporting an increase of three per cent in 2023 compared to 2022 for Regina's total Crime Rate for CMA levels, in the latest findings.

Regina ranks ninth out of the 41 CMAs in Canada for reported crime rates, according to the Regina Police Service report, a decrease in the ranking compared to 2022. Regina has 7,988 reported crimes per CMA 100,000 population in 2023.

The Crime Rate is defined as a measure of the number of crimes per 100,000 population. This allows comparisons of crime counts over a period of time and between regions.

A CMA area is comprised of an urban core and its surrounding area, with a total population of 100,000 or more, with at least 50,000 people living in the urban core itself.

In Saskatchewan as a whole, the province saw a two per cent increase in its CSI in 2023, compared to 2022.
