SASKATCHEWAN — The team at Saskatchewan Polytechnic helped spread holiday cheer this December with a collection of activities and initiatives intended to lift spirits, promote emotional well-СÀ¶ÊÓƵ and foster cultural learning and celebration for Indigenous students.
This December the team celebrated the . A week’s-worth of on-campus events held in each city to celebrate the season with fun activities and prizes co-ordinated through the .
Deanna Kematch, Indigenous Student Success director says, “It is an opportunity to gather with and make a positive impact on the lives of Sask Polytech Indigenous students during the holiday season.”
The Season of Sharing program at Sask Polytech aims to create a sense of belonging for Indigenous students on campus who are often away from their families.
Kematch adds, “The program reflects our commitment to fostering a spirit of sharing and community as well as a sense of overall support and belonging to post-secondary education.”
The Season of Sharing also facilitates meaningful engagement between industry sponsors and students. Thank you to this year’s sponsors, AMI Supply and STC Industrial Group who had the opportunity to connect with potential future talent.
The in-person events at all four Sask Polytech locations included a festive lunch, a hot chocolate bar, gingerbread house and cookie decorating, sweater contests, holiday games and more.
The Season of Sharing saw an incredible turnout across Saskatchewan, demonstrating the program's significant impact through embracing the spirit of togetherness and cultural learning:
- 150 participants - Prince Albert
- 620 participants - Saskatoon
- 196 participants - Moose Jaw
- 203 participants – Regina
Shayleen McNabb, program head north, Indigenous Student Success says, “The Season of Sharing really gave our students, staff, and faculty an opportunity to come together. We shared laughter and stories over holiday food and music. Our Indigenous students at the Prince Albert campus were blown away at the generosity they received during this week. They expressed their endless gratitude for the opportunity.”
Derek Yee, Indigenous Student Centre coordinator Saskatoon campus says, “Our Season of Sharing week this year was a resounding success! Friday alone we served over 200 students a Christmas meal. We thank all donors from the bottom of our hearts.”
