MOOSE JAW — The Moose Jaw and District Sports Hall of Fame has been honouring local and area athletes for 10 years and is asking city hall for continued support to issue charitable tax receipts.
During its Jan. 13 regular meeting, city council unanimously agreed to designate the organization as a municipal project until Dec. 31, 2029, with either party able to terminate the designation with 90 days’ notice.
This is the third time that the Sports Hall of Fame — located in the Events Centre — has asked to be designated as a municipal project, as council previously granted similar requests in 2014 and 2019. The most recent designation expired on Dec. 31, 2023, prompting a new request from the group.
Since 2014, the organization has held 10 induction ceremonies that have honoured 55 athletes, teams and builders across 20 sports.
The Canada Revenue Agency considers municipalities as qualified donors that can issue donation receipts for income tax purposes, a council report said. Previously, city council has designated municipal projects that have “a broad scope and benefit the general public,” with this decision allowing city hall to direct all funds received to the project without further approvals.
The City of Moose Jaw has nine designated municipal projects, each requiring an accounting of funds, receipt of donations and issuance of tax-deductible receipts, the report continued. Those projects include:
- Burrowing Owl Interpretive Centre (no expiry)
- Moose Jaw Arts in Motion (no expiry)
- Festival of Words (no expiry)
- Tourism Moose Jaw (no expiry)
- Murals of Moose Jaw (no expiry)
- North West Community Association (no expiry)
- Pickleball Moose Jaw (expires Dec. 31, 2026)
- Hillcrest Golf Club (expires Dec. 31, 2029
- Hope Ministries Moose Jaw Inc. (expires Dec. 31, 2025)
Since 2014, the Moose Jaw and District Sports Hall of Fame has been raising funds to honour community athletes, teams, and builders, and it wishes to continue issuing charitable receipts to donors for future induction ceremonies, the report added.
The next regular council meeting is Monday, Jan. 27.
