MOOSEJAWTODAY.COM -- The Moose Jaw U13 A and U19 A Ice are among five local teams in action during the Softball Sask provincial championships this weekend.
And if everything goes according to plan for the Moose Jaw crews, there will be plenty of medals to show for their work when everything is said and done.
The Ice are one of the favourites in the U13 A division, in no small part thanks to their 31-5 record through the campaign, including a gold medal victory during the annual Moose Jaw A tournament last weekend.
Moose Jaw got things off to a good start on Friday afternoon in Regina with a 17-6 victory over the Regina Lazers and were set to face the Prince Albert Aces (Saturday, 10:30 a.m. Saturday) and Saskatoon Raiders (Saturday, 6 p.m.) in their other round robin games.
The top two teams from each of the four round robin pools advance to the playoffs, with the medal games at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The top three teams will advance to the Western Canadian championship in Brandon Aug. 1-4.
The U19 A Ice are taking the field at provincials in Saskatoon, with the event featuring a four team round robin. Moose Jaw opens against the Saskatoon Prairie Dog Selects (Friday, 6:30 p.m.) before facing the Saskatoon Wolverine Selects (Saturday, 10:30 a.m.) and Regina Kaos (Saturday, 4:30 p.m.)
The top three teams from the round robin advance to the playoffs, with the gold medal game at 2:30 p.m. Three of the four teams will also advance to the Canadian championship in Saskatoon from July 31 to Aug. 4.
Three Ice B teams are also in action this weekend.
The U13 B Ice are in Estevan and opened their five-team round robin with a 15-5 win over the Saskatoon Lightning Fury. They’re back on the field against the Neudorf White Sox (Friday, 4 p.m.) before taking on the Regina Royals Rebels (Saturday, 10 a.m.) and Melfort Spirit (Saturday, 2 p.m.).
The top two teams from each of the four round robin pools advance to playoffs, with the medal games at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
The U15 B Ice are in Saskatoon for one of the largest provincial tournaments, featuring 31 teams. They got things started with a 10-1 win over the Indian Head Angels and take on the Parkland Predators (Saturday, 10 a.m.) and Maidstone Lakers (Saturday, 2 p.m.) in their other round robin games.
The top team from each of the eight pools advances to the championship round, with the medal games at 3 p.m. Sunday.
The U17 B Ice are in Regina and kicked off their five-team round robin with a 12-0 win over the Regina Saints. They’re set to face the East Central Wolverines (Friday, 4 p.m.), Saskatoon Selects Cougars (Saturday, 10:30 a.m.) and Prince Albert Aces (Saturday, 6 p.m.) in their other games.
The top two teams from each of the four pools advance to the playoffs, with the medal games at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
