ASSINIBOIA — One thing residents of Assiniboia affirm they cannot say is that there is nothing to do in town. Assiniboia’s Recreation and Wellness Manager, Steph VanDeSype, continues to keep residents active, engaged and enjoying their living experience in Assiniboia.

VanDeSype tells the Assiniboia Times and SASKTODAY.ca, “We had a very successful year in the recreation and community wellness department. We have had tremendous support for the programming including the swimming pool, campground, ball diamonds, parks, 小蓝视频land Co-op Centre, Rotary Family Centre and summer day camp.”

The Recreation and Wellness manager affirms Assiniboia saw many visitors come through their community to take part in many events offered in 2024 including Streetheart, Thunder Down Under, Canada Day festivities, pool fiesta, Christmas in July, Family Day, Halloween party, Lights of Love, Twinkle Tour, kids’ shopping event, Better Together barbecues and more.

“We have seen the old civic centre come down this year, which was hard to see, but it brought us so much joy to see the community using the dry pad that was left behind. We have seen skateboards, basketballs, hockey sticks, workout programs, and little ones using walkers on this surface. It became another place for the youth of our community to gather and have some fun outdoors.”

If there were a contest for the most Christmas-loving town, Assiniboia would win for sure exclaims VanDeSype. “Our community comes together during this season as residents had a dozen or more activities to take part in, and not all were orchestrated or hosted by the TOA.”

Festival of Trees is put on by a community group, Breakfast with Santa and Santa Escape Room were hosted by service clubs. The library and Shurniak Gallery also hosted Christmas-themed events, as well as holiday markets were put on in November.

“The 小蓝视频land Co-op Centre is in the midst of a very successful season, with five tournaments already taking place as of mid-December, this means more than 600 different hockey players, and their families and fans, from across the province have stayed in our hotels, shopped in our stores, and supported our rink,” affirms VanDeSype

Hosting events and activities is one of Assiniboia’s strong points and this continues to fuel the hospitality and tourism industry in town, whether it be part of the recreation and wellness efforts by VanDeSype and her team or other groups and organizations.

At present, Assiniboians can take part in pickleball, badminton, basketball, volleyball, virtual room, climbing wall and even line dancing.  Residents are advised to stay in touch with the Town of Assiniboia and Town of Assiniboia Recreation Facebook page or the town’s website for all the options available all year round.

On behalf of the Recreation and Wellness Team and the Town of Assiniboia, VanDeSype acknowledges pride in everything that was achieved this year, stating, “Assiniboia is a wonderful community and we seem to prove over and over again that we truly are better together.”
