Ronald Earl Glover

Ronald Earl Glover, late of Osage, passed away peacefully June 20, 2013 at the Fillmore Health Centre. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Hazel Glover, and one sister in infancy. Ron is survived by his wife, Madge Glover, of Osage; sons Tim, of Houston, Texas, and Ted, of Osage; grandchildren Tori and Brody; one brother, Don (Barb) Glover; one niece, Alison (Andrew) Shanaida of Weyburn, and one nephew, Rommel Glover of Osage. Ron was born on the family farm a few miles north of Osage on October 4, 1937. He first attended nearby Latham School, sometimes riding a shetland pony to school, or skiing there cross-country in winter. As a young man, Ron enjoyed playing baseball and hockey. He also loved working on the farm from an early age and was happy to work around the clock during harvest. In 1946, Ron's parents moved their old farmhouse into Osage and opened a garage and service station. Ron completed his schooling in Osage and took over the family farm operation by the time he was in Grade 12. On April 12, 1958, he married Madge Lakeman, and they moved into the old farm house behind 'Glover's Service' in Osage. With help from friends in the community, Ron and his cousin Raymond Earl completed a new house in 1962, just outside of Osage, across the street from Ron's parents, and next door to Ron and Madge's good friends, Jim and Joyce Lynch. Ron probably loved airplanes and flying as much as farming: he and his brother Don took flying lessons together and obtained their pilot's licenses in 1967. Together, they purchased a 1947 Champ airplane. Ron built an airstrip and hangar, and owned a series of airplanes over the years. When grasshopper infestations threatened crops in the 1980's, Ron purchased a spray plane. For 16 years, he sprayed his own crops and those of other farmers in the area. As members of the Weyburn Flying Club, he and Madge made a number of good friends, and took occasional trips by plane to destinations in Canada and the US. With his son Ted, Ron continued to farm but by his late sixties, Alzheimer's was disrupting this flying farmer's busy life. In 2008, he agreeably took up residence at the Fillmore Health Centre, and there retained the good and kind personality he had his entire life. The family thanks the staff of the Fillmore Health Centre for the care they provided Ron. He will always be greatly missed by his family and friends. A memorial service for Ron was held June 26, at the Osage Community Church, followed by interment at Osage Cemetery. Donations in memory of Ron may be made to the Fillmore Health Centre Activities Fund or to the Osage Church Historical Society. Condolences may be left at: www.fletcherfuneralchapel.com. Arrangements entrusted to Fletcher Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, 306-842-5432.
