The Editor,
Organ donation saves lives! I know, because almost 10 years ago, it saved mine.
A family had the courage, at a very difficult time, to have something positive result from a tragic situation. How can I ever thank them enough for saving my life?
Because of their decision, I have been able to watch my two daughters grow up!
I have been able to have a satisfying career, spend more time with my family and friends, and generally live a full and grateful life. I know that I didn't have much time to live, and I feel so fortunate that this grieving family made a very courageous decision.
Presently in Saskatchewan, there are approximately 180 people waiting for an organ or tissue donation. Some of them won't live unless an organ becomes available. A good start is to put the sticker on your health card, but it is not enough. If you believe in organ donation, be certain your family knows your wishes. They are the ones who will have to make the decision at a very difficult time. To make your wishes known, please visit www.isanorgandonor.com. Making your wishes known and talking to your family and friends about organ donation could raise awareness of organ donation and ultimately save lives.
More information on this issue is available at www.health.gov.sk.ca/organ-and-tissue.
Organ donation does save lives, and I am living proof of that!
A very grateful organ recipient
