Exhausted Environmentalist

It's Earth Day, April 22, and people worldwide are encouraging environmentalism and considering conservation.

Not too long ago, I had nearly given up on recycling. I had become weary of looking at the bags of cans and paper, piles of flattened cardboard, and boxes of bottles and jars in my porch. Dropping off the recycling is especially difficult in the winter time, and I just kept waiting for a nicer day to take it all in, but it never came!

Recycling does have its payoff, though, and that is the deposit money.

As long as this past winter was, it was not that long ago that I began recycling anything other than beverage containers (and paper, of course!). Like most people, I was really only in it for the deposit money.

I experienced a shift, however, recently in my recycling habits and it wasn't due to the garbage restrictions imposed by the city's new refuse bins. Those bins have been fairly sufficient for our household waste.

I am not really sure what started it but I have become reluctant about tossing a lot of things in the trash. I'm not sure whether that makes me a hoarder or environmentally conscience. Well, I'm not sentimental about the recycling pile and certainly do not object to getting it out of my house, so it must be the latter.

My initial challenge when it came to recycling all this new stuff, such as glass bottles, tin cans and cardboard, was not so much giving up the space that was required, as it was figuring out how to treat it. I didn't want to be the one that contaminated a whole bin of recycling because I wasn't doing it right. But I did not know if it had to be scrubbed clean of all paper and debris or if I was just wasting my time doing that - and it is time consuming to get some of those food labels off, I have even quit buying brands that use really sticky labels, out of principle!

It turns out that Weyburn doesn't have as rigorous recycling rules as some cities so my concern was somewhat needless. It is simple to remember that each product 小蓝视频 recycled needs to be just that - ONE product: tin without paper, paper without staples, and cardboard without pizza cheese!
