The Assiniboia Livestock Auction held a pre-sorted all breeds sale for calves and yearlings on September 12. Steer calves and yearlings sold well above prices reached at this time last year. Heifer yearling prices were also higher than last year.
There were five weight categories of steer calves and five categories of steer yearlings. Steer calves weighing 300 to 400 lbs. averaged $2.39 per lb., selling up to $2.54. Those in the 400 to 450 lb. weight category averaged $2.35 per lb. and sold up to $2.36 per lb. Steer calves weighing 450 to 500 lbs. sold for an average $2.22 per lb. and reached up to $2.26 per lb., while those weighing 500 to 550 lbs. averaged $2.00 per lb. and reached $2.25 per lb. Steer calves that weighed between 550 and 600 lbs. sold at $2.05 per lb.
Steer yearlings weighing between 600 and 650 per lb. averaged $1.85 per lb., selling up to $2.05 per lb., while those weighing 650 to 700 lb. averaged $1.95 per lb. and sold up to $2.10 per lb. Steer yearlings weighing 700 to 800 lbs. averaged $1.97 per lb., selling up to $2.10 per lb., while those weighing 800 to 900 lbs. sold on average at $1.80 per lb., selling up to $2.00 per lb. Steer yearlings weighing over 900 lbs. sold on average at $1.60 per lb., selling up to $1.73 per lb.
Heifer calves in the 300 to 400 lb. weight category averaged $2.03 per lb. and sold up to $2.06 per lb., while those between 500 and 550 lbs. sold at $1.76 per lb. Heifer calves in the 550 to 600 lb. weight category averaged $1.65 per lb., selling up to $1.84 per lb. Heifer yearlings weighing 600 to 650 lbs. averaged $1.62 per lb. and sold up to $1.76 per lb., while those weighing 650 to 700 lbs. sold on average at $1.73 per lb., selling up to $1.77 per lb. The heifer yearlings weighing 700 to 800 lbs. averaged $1.70 per lb. and sold up to $1.77 per lb., while those 800 to 900 lbs. averaged $1.66 per lb., selling up to $1.74 per lb. Heifer yearlings weighing over 900 lbs. sold on average at $1.49 per lb. and sold up to $1.61 per lb.
The Assiniboia Livestock Auction held a regular cull cow and bull sale on September 13 with 240 head sold, up from the previous sale in late August. After a three-week hiatus, heiferettes were auctioned selling between $0.85 to $1.00 per lb. D1 and D2 cows dropped $0.11 per lb. from the previous sale to sell between $0.75 to $0.85 per lb. D3 cows sold between $0.65 to $0.75 per lb. which was a decline of $0.10 per lb. from the previous sale. There were no canner cows sold at the September 13 auction. Slaughter bulls sold in a range of $0.96 and $1.08 per lb., falling $0.13 to $0.18 per lb.
The Assiniboia Livestock Auction will hold its next regular sale for cull cows and bulls on September 27.
