The Strippers' 29th annual Spring Bust hockey tournament crowned four new champions this past weekend.
The largest old-timers tournament in the province saw 28 teams compete in seven divisions. Eight of those teams vied for titles in the four divisions that held championship games on Sunday.
The Days Inn Division saw the Estevan Oilers drop the Regina Blackouts 10-5 in the final. Scott Saigeon scored a hat trick for the Oilers, as did Mike Sillinger. Kevin Culy scored twice, and Ryan Kreinke and Trevor Brodziak each scored one in the contest that saw the Oilers lead 6-1 after the first half.
In the Tap House Division, the Lumsden Rockers defeated the Carlyle Black Hawks 9-3 on Sunday. Lumsden was also recognized with the Canadian Adult Recreational Hockey Association oldest player award, which went to Dave Hansen, at 66. The award goes to the oldest player in the tournament, who hasn't already won it.
In the Einar Fagerheim Memorial Division a pair of hometown teams battled it out as the Estevan Ceda Sharks beat the Estevan Flyers 5-3.
The Flyers had a 3-0 lead after the first half with goals coming from Ron Coulter and Tim Bangsund, who scored a pair.
The Ceda Sharks rallied in the second half however, scoring five unanswered goals. Craig Gusikoski, Scott Walton, Gary Karpa, Kent McLellan and Dalton Giblett led the way for their team, all putting one past the Flyers goalie to earn the Sharks the title.
Sherritt Coal championship game saw the Moose Jaw Midwest Warriors take down the Estevan Tap House Rookies 5-3.
The Warriors had a strong first half, leading the Rookies 4-2. Jeff Weekes scored twice for the Warriors, along with Paul Bruce and Curtis Lalonde. Trevor Dutka and Gary Earl scored for the Rookies in the first half.
In the second, Lalonde scored his second for the Warriors and Dave Lavoie scored the Rookies' third.
The tournament's answer to the Lady Byng Award, is the Tap House Sportsmanship Award, given to the team in the average age 40-and-over division with the fewest penalties, and the James Schroeder Memorial Sportsmanship Award, to the team with the fewest penalties in the 30-and-over division.
The Carson Wings, with only two penalty minutes, won the Tap House Sportsmanship award for the third straight year.
Also for the third consecutive year, Estevan Oilers were awarded the James Schroeder Memorial, with only four penalty minutes.
