Weyburn's last road trip wasn't what players and coaches had hoped for as they head into the Christmas holidays.
LaRonge's powerplay was Weyburn's downfall during their last game of the three-day road trip, which ended December 12th.
The Ice Wolves' Marc Andre Carre scored his first goal of his natural hat trick on the power play at the 15:20 mark of the first period. Carre's next two goals came in short order at the 4:09 and 7:22 minute marks of the second period leaving Weyburn in a three-goal deficit. That was until Byron Sorenson scored on the power play for LaRonge making it a 4-0 lead.
Brock Appleyard finally put Weyburn on the scoreboard at the 12:12 mark of the second period with help from Shawn and Rodney Cowie.
LaRonge put another notch on the scoreboard when Justin Ducharme scored his first of two goals making it a 5-1 contest to this point.
The Wings would claw back in the final period, but their two goals weren't enough to squeak out a win on the road. Appleyard along with the Cowie brothers would draw their team one goal closer at the 7:27 mark of the third period.
Coltyn Sanderson would get Weyburn's final goal at the 13:26 minute mark with assists going to TJ Wees and Tanner McCall.
Wolves' Ducharme would score his final goal at the 16:09 mark of the last period to make it a 6-3 game and out of reach for the weary Wings.
Wild shoot-out in Melfort gives Wings boost
Ninety minutes of regulation time couldn't settle a game against the Melfort Mustangs but a shoot-out proved to be the lucky charm for the Weyburn Red Wings on December 10th. at the Northern Lights Palace. Red Wings netminder Mitch Kilgore faced 38 shots while Melfort's Charles Corsi faced 32 shots.
But it was Drew George and Lucas Ulmer as the Wings' saviors in the shoot-out which saw Weyburn score twice while Melfort's Sean Aschim answering with only one goal.
Back and forth battle in Nipawin
Eric Bollefer started out the game with a bang for Nipawin Hawks fans as he scored in the first 15-seconds of the game.
Then it was Weyburn's Tanner McCall who would answer back with a goal of his own at the 44 second mark of the opening period to knot the game at one-all.
Jamie Johnson made it a 2-1 game in Nipawin's favor at the 3:05 mark but this only raised the Weyburn's determination to even the score and at the 3:49 mark of the opening period Ross evened the score with the help of Sanderson and Ulmer.
But with the opening of the second period the Hawks answered the bell at the 36 second mark when Tyler Paslawski scored shorthanded. His line mate Eli Lichtenwald would increase the team's lead at the 46-second mark of the same period to make it a 4-2 contest to this early point in the game.
Bruce Keegan would draw the Wings one goal closer at the 2:40 mark of the second period when he took a pass from Rodney Cowie and Appleyard.
The Hawk's Jamie Johnson increased Nipawin's lead on the powerplay to a comfortable 5-3 lead at the 13:07 mark.
Weyburn would battle back and at the 15:54 mark, Shawn Cowie was rewarded with the team's fourth goal but it wasn't enough to overcome the advantage that the Hawks held over them.
The Hawks would increase their lead with their sixth and final goal of the game at the 5:30 mark of the third period when Mathew Spafford found the back of the Wing's net.
The Wings go in to the Christmas break with two homes games, Friday, December 17 vs. Melville and Saturday, December 18 against the first place Yorkton Terriers.
