Wings vs. LaRonge
Weyburn got off to its slowest start on hometown ice. Was it the slow speed of the Ice Wolves or just some rust on the Wings' blades Saturday night in front of a hometown crowd of roughly 300 disappointed Weyburn fans.
The Wings appeared to be lethargic right from the drop of the first puck at Crescent Point Place as Weyburn seemed to be in the Ice Wolves trance of slow, choppy hockey. This game could have been out of reach from the get-go if it were not for the backstopping of Mitch Kilgore.
Kilgore faced rush after rush with a defence that was content to back into the Wings' netminder play after play knowing full well that their netminder would take most of the heat off an indifferent Red Wing team.
LaRonge got off to an early lead and never looked back as Doug Lindensmith had his hat trick before the start of the third period. Lindensmith scored at the 10-minute mark of the first period, followed by Travis Eggum making it a 2-0 contest with 4.8 seconds remaining in the opening marker.
Lindensmith would add both goals in the second period elevating the Ice Wolves to a 4-0 advantage over the host team.
Weyburn would take the ice for the final period with a bit more enthusiasm, most likely due to an ear-bending, one-way conversation from Coach McMillan during the intermission. But try as they might the Wings could not solve the mystery of Ice Wolves netminder Adam Bartko.
In the dying seconds of the third period the Ice Wolves Marc Andre Carre would drive the final nail in Weyburn's coffin making it a 6-0 routing in front of a dejected Weyburn crowd.
Wings vs. Melville
Weyburn was set to redeem themselves on home ice Tuesday night against the Melville Millionaires but due to a flu bug in the moneymen's dressing room, the game was re-scheduled for a future date.
Tidbits
Lake Superior State (and former Weyburn Red Wing) player, Kyle Haines earned Central Collegiate Hockey CCHA Defenseman of the Week. Haines totaled four blocked shots during both games against Ferris State. He ended a +1 during Saturday's win with an assist on Domenic Monardo's first goal. Haines is the third highest point getter on Lake Superior State. Haines was the popular 2007-08 Red Wing Captain.
