The Weyburn Red Wings hockey club and the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) have announced the three players that will represent the team in year-end awards at the end of the season. The announcement of which players have been nominated by the team was made on February 8 as the SJHL's President Tour presented by Source Embroidery-Yorkton made a stop in Weyburn.
The President's Tour is a chance to promote the upcoming SJHL playoffs and to show-off the Credit Union Cup and the SJHL SaskTel Showcase of Awards.
Winger Brock Appleyard was nominated for Most Outstanding Player. The third-year Red Wing from Lundar, Manitoba has been the team's leading scorer this season. Appleyard goes into the week with 65 points. He plays with a physical presence and his shot is seen as one of the hardest in the SJHL.
Defenseman T.J. Wees was nominated for Most Outstanding Defenseman. The Colorado native has been a fixture in Weyburn for the past two-and-a-half years. Considered as a defensive defenseman, Wees has garnered the respect of many across the league for his style and is thought of by many to be one of the top defenders in the SJHL.
Goalie Mitch Kilgore was nominated for Top Rookie. The 19-year-old is excelling on the ice and in the classroom. The Outlook, Saskatchewan product has a 94 percent average, while on the ice he leads the SJHL in shutouts with three and is a major reason as to why the Red Wings are where they are right now.
These three players will join the nominees from the 11 other SJHL teams for year-end awards. Those awards will be announced shortly after the end of the regular-season.
