Pickleball made its debut in Assiniboia on January 9 at the Prince of Wales auditorium. The Recreation Department is bringing the popular new recreational game to Assiniboia for the first time.
Session run on Mondays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and Wednesdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The first session started on Monday, January 9 and it will run until April when the program will transition to an outdoor space.
Pickleball is an indoor game similar to tennis played in sets on a court. It uses a small plastic wiffle ball and wooden paddles. The pickleball sessions are run as a recreational program open to everyone. Sessions operate on a drop-in basis. There is a small fee of $5 per session.
Participants can wear street clothing but are asked to bring indoor running shoes. The whole point of the program is to encourage healthy living and staying active, according to the Recreation Department.
The Recreation Department will also be organizing winter hiking and snowshoeing. Guided hikes will take place once a month. The first hike takes place on January 15. Those who wish to participate are asked to meet at the Civic Centre at 1 p.m.
Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. Participants can hike or snowshoe. The walk will be guided along a nature trail for between one hour and 90 minutes. Participants are asked to dress appropriately for hiking, and to bring snowshoes if they have them. A limited number of snowshoes will be available by the Recreation Department.
Hikes are also planned for February and March. The Recreation Department is also planning a tobogganing day at Willows Dam on February 5 and Family Day activities for February 21. The outdoor rink is also now in operation with the lights going on at 5 p.m.
