Carson Perkins pitched a no-hitter without even realizing it.
The Estevan TS&M Tornados peewee pitcher blanked the Regina White Sox 6-0 Sunday in a game that was called after five innings due to the weather.
But it wasn't until after the game that he found out he'd done something special.
"After the game, my coach (Kent Phillips) came up to me and said, 'You just threw a no-hitter,' said Perkins, 12.
"I was kind of surprised."
Along the way, he racked up 10 strikeouts and darn near threw a perfect game.
The only runner to reach base for the White Sox got there on an error.
"He did an awesome job and had quite a few strikeouts, besides the fact we played good defence behind him," said Phillips.
"It was pretty good. It felt good to go through the whole game and be under my pitch count," said Perkins, who has been getting congratulations from family and friends at school.
The young hurler said he would have been OK to keep going had the game gone seven innings.
"My arm was fine and I thought I was doing pretty good," he said.
The Tornados posted a 1-3 record over four road games on the weekend, their first action of the Baseball Regina peewee AAA season.
The weekend began on a sour note when the Tornados lost both games of a doubleheader against the Regina Pacers by scores of 15-5 and 18-10.
"We didn't do so well against the Pacers. We kept it close for a while, but we gave up a lot of runs on walks and errors, or passed balls," said Phillips.
"I don't know what it was on Saturday. I guess the kids were nervous and they had a tough time finding the strike zone. We went through a lot of pitching on Saturday."
Leadoff hitter Mac Fichter paced the Tornados with four hits on the day, while Perkins and Dawson Nobiss had three apiece.
Sunday's doubleheader against the White Sox was supposed to be played in Estevan, but it had to be moved to Regina after the teams couldn't find a local umpire.
All six runs in the first game came in a fourth-inning explosion for the Tornados.
The team batted around, with Perkins, Carter Kuchinka, Brett MacMurchy, Nate Smart, Erik McKersie and Fichter all coming in to score.
The damage was done on a Perkins double, a walk to Kuchinka, singles from MacMurchy and Smart, three Regina errors and two passed balls.
The Tornados also stole six bases in the inning.
The second game of the day saw the White Sox recover for a 5-3 win.
"We kept it close and ran out of pitching, basically, because we used up so much on Saturday," said Phillips.
Estevan scored twice in the second inning and once in the fourth. Kuchinka crossed the plate twice and Perkins scored the other run.
The peewees will host Weyburn tonight at 6:15 p.m. They travel to Melville this weekend for a doubleheader on Sunday.
The Tornados were also supposed to play a doubleheader in Yorkton on Saturday, but Yorkton has pulled out of the league due to not having enough players.
