The Weyburn Red Wings have found their stride and are now third place in the Sherwood Conference. One of the strengths for the team is goaltender Mitch Kilgore, who is currently ranked as the third best goalie in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.
The Red Wings lost in a shootout against the Notre Dame Hounds on Nov. 6. In the first period, the Wings got on the board after Keegan Bruce scored a power play goal at 15:15, assisted by Dylan Coupal and Shawn Cowie. The Notre Dame Hounds also scored in the first.
Both the second and third periods were scoreless, forcing the game into an overtime period. After neither team were able to score in overtime, the game was determined by a shootout. For the Red Wings, Jesse Ross scored one goal, while Shawn Cowie, TJ Wees and Coltyn Sanderson were unable to make a shot past the net. The Hounds scored twice past Kilgore in net during the shootout for the win.
The game against Humboldt on Friday was a battle to keep a winning streak, since at that time the Wings had four straight wins and the Broncos had six. It was the Red Wings who kept their winning streak alive, defeating the Broncos 3-1.
During the first period, Jesse Ross scored a power play goal at 3:03, assisted by S. Cowie and Wees. Humboldt had also scored during the first. Then in the second period, Scott Kirkham scored at 10:46, assisted by Ross and Sanderson; and during the third period, Kyle Vogal scored at 10:26, assisted by Kevin Mann and Brayden Kmita.
With goaltender Kilgore preventing the Broncos from scoring any further goals, the game was decided in the Red Wings' favour. Kilgore was able to prevent 28 out of 29 attempts.
The Red Wings had won 4-2 over Yorkton on Nov. 2. They started strong in the first period, with Scott Kirkham scoring at 0:15, assisted by Taylor Ernst; and an unassisted short-handed goal scored by Cole Klippenstein at 13:16. The Terriers only scored once in the first.
During the second period, Kirkham picked up another goal at 9:15, assisted by Bruce and Sanderson. Then in the third period, Rodney Cowie scored during a power play at 19:34, assisted by Bruce and S. Cowie.
Kilgore earned the win in net, stopping 22 out of 24 shots.
In action against the Nipawin Hawks on Oct. 31, the Red Wings secured a 4-0 shutout. They dominated during the first period of action, scoring three times and secured their fourth goal in the second period. Scoring were Appleyard, Sanderson, Drew George and Klippenstein.
Playing on Oct. 29, the Red Wings blanked Kindersley 6-0. Two goals were scored by S. Cowie, with singles taken by George, Kmita and Ross.
Kilgore had been in net for both shutouts. He stopped 31 shots during from the Hawks, and 17 shots from the Klippers.
The next action for the Red Wings will be when they host the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m., at Crescent Point Place.
