Members of the Vilcu's Karate Club competed in the Fifth Annual open martial arts Young Tigers Challenge in Melville on Nov. 27.
The competition was open to participants of all ages, levels and styles of martial arts. Several members of the club earned medals at the competition, as they strengthen their chances to qualify for the Canadian team chosen for the Pan Am Games.
Jay Boll won gold in empty hand forms, point sparring and weapon sparring, and also took fourth in weapon forms. Staci Barker won gold in empty hand forms and weapon forms, silver in point sparring, and bronze in weapon sparring and light kickboxing. Dena Bachorcik earned gold in weapon sparring, and silvers in empty hand forms, point sparring, and light kickboxing.
Yang Yang Zhang won gold in empty hand forms, silver in points sparring and bronze in weapon sparring. Logan Ereth took gold in point sparring and bronze in weapon sparring and empty hand forms. Kati King earned silver in weapon sparring and bronze in point sparring and empty hand forms.
Angela Vilcu won silver in weapon sparring, bronze in point sparring and fourth in empty hand forms. Billy Vilcu placed fourth in empty hand forms and point sparring. Adam Vilcu took fourth in weapon sparring. Kade Bachorcik also competed in the Young Tigers Challenge.
The next competition for the Vilcu Karate Club will be held in Regina at the end of February. Then they will host their own tournament in March.
