It's time to lace up those running shoes and hit the road. If you need a fitness goal to work towards this summer, Moose Mountain Marathon may just be it. The marathon is back for its third year and luckily for you, there is still time to prepare.
The marathon is held at Saskairie, which is located eight kilometres south of highway 13, about halfway between Arcola and Carlyle. The marathon encourages a variety of fitness levels as it provides varied distances for its participants. Distances include the half marathon run/walk which is 21.2 kilometres in distance, the 10K run/walk and the 5K run/walk. Water stations are located every 2.5 kilometres along the route to ensure that participants keep hydrated.
Age categories include male and female 18 years and under, 19 to 30 years, 31 to 45 years of age, 46 to 54 years of age and 55 years and over. Prizes for participants include gold, silver and bronze medallions in each category, medals for all participants and door prizes.
The terrain is hilly with gravel roads and grassy trails making the early morning run one of scenic travels for runners. The race gets going at 7 a.m. in an attempt to beat the possible heat caused by the mid afternoon sun.
The marathon is a fundraiser for the Arcola School Track Club. Last year, more than 40 runners took to the route and this year organizers are hoping to surpass that number. Everyone is welcome, whether they run or walk their chosen distance.
Pre-registration is encouraged. To register for the marathon or for more information contact Cathy Burton at 455-2751 or by email at [email protected].
