Kory Ginnis has had luck on his side in the past at Estevan. This year he considers himself lucky just to be here. The two-time Estevan Rodeo bull riding champion was bucked off his ride in Eston earlier this month, taking a horn to the chest and another to the head."I was pretty sore," the Grenfell native said Monday. "I had a bruise over my heart so I didn't know if I'd cracked any ribs or what, but I can tell it's just muscle sore so that's good."I took a pretty good shot so it was a good thing for having a helmet and a vest because I was pretty much able to walk away."Ginnis won the bull riding event here in 2006 and 2008, the same years he won the Canadian Cowboys' Association finals at Agribition in Regina. He turns 32 on Sunday and is consistently among the oldest competitors in his event.Could there be a better birthday present than showing the youngsters how it's done with another win in Estevan?"I've been drawing some really good bulls and then some really bad bulls. I haven't been having that good of a string," Ginnis said of his 2010 season. "I got second in Moose Jaw last weekend and got a cheque in Hamiota early in the year, but another win at Estevan will get 'er turned around for sure."The rodeo runs Thursday through Saturday at the exhibition grounds and events - which include saddle bronc, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, team roping, barrel racing, bareback, and bull riding - will begin at 7 p.m. each day.Entries were so strong this year that organizers have scheduled a slack show for 2 p.m. Saturday as well."That means there's too many competitors in the main show so they have to run some of them in the afternoon to get them all in," said Estevan Exhibition Association president Rodney Dukart.Events will kick off with a parade Thursday at 4 p.m. and will conclude with a fireworks show following Saturday evening's rodeo events.
