Two beautiful days accompanied the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association (SHSAA) Provincial Golf Championship on Sept. 23 and 24. More than 120 golfers took to the Kenosee Golf Course to showcase their skills against provincial competitors.
The golfers came from throughout the province with representation from high schools as far away as Meadow Lake, Prince Albert and Nipawin. While players were able to partake in a practice round on Thursday evening to familiarize themselves with the course, the championship did not start until Friday morning.
Friday saw an early start with golfers taking part in the opening ceremonies at 9 a.m. Co-commissioners Trent Johnson from Carlyle and Nathan Johnson from Estevan welcomed the golfers and provided a brief explanation of the championship proceedings and rules. In addition, the Mayor of Kenosee was on hand to say a few words and to welcome golfers, parents, coaches and spectators to the area. SHSAA President, Kevin Vollet, spoke for a few moments to provide greetings from the association's office and executive.
Following the opening ceremonies, golfers took to the course with an 11 a.m. shotgun start. There was not a cloud in the sky and the sun was full of heat for round one of the championship.
Following Friday's round of golf, the leader in the boys category was Daegan Wall from Regina with a 70. Following was Aaron Vogel from Regina with a 73 and Kyle Wiebe from Kindersley with a 74.
Lisa Reid from Regina led the girl's division following the completion of round one with a score of 86. She was followed by Ricki-Lee Scott from Whitewood with an 88 and Katie Burkell from Saskatoon with a 91.
Saturday continued with round two of the golf championship starting at 10 a.m. Riley Grona from Coronach led the round for the boy's category with a score of 71. Following the leader was Avery Mykytyzyn from Melfort and Daegan Wall from Regina with scores of 74.
Round two for the girls saw Ricki-Lee Scott from Whitewood lead with a score of 86, followed by Lisa Reid from Regina with an 88 and Katie Burkell from Saskatoon with a 91.
Following round two on Saturday, co-commissioners Trent Johnson and Nathan Johnson led the closing ceremonies. Champions were determined and presented with their medal and plaque.
In the boy's category, the gold medal went to Daegan Wall who shot even par for the course over the two-day championship with a score of 144. Silver was given to Riley Grona from Coronach with a score of 148, followed by Avery Mykytyzyn from Melfort who took home bronze with a score of 151.
In order for a champion to be determined in the girl's category, a tie-breaker was required. Lisa Reid from Regina and Ricki-Lee Scott from Whitewood went head-to-head in a one hole playoff. Reid became the champion of the tournament with a birdie during the playoff and was given the gold medal based on a two-day score of 174. Scott went home the winner of the silver medal with a score of 174. Katie Burkell took home the bronze medal with a score of 182.
Team scores were calculated for the weekend. Winners for the boy's teams included gold medallists LeBoldus High School from Regina, second place Bishop James Mahoney from Saskatoon and Melfort Comprehensive High School who captured bronze.
The team taking home the gold in the female category was from Coronach School, followed by Swift Current Comprehensive High School in second and Whitewood School taking third.
Golfers representing Carlyle and area included Blaze Meyer, Ty Currie, Brayden Starr, and Austin Veysey.
