Exchange student Valentin Schwamborn has appreciated his exchange program, while living in Assiniboia.

From Tuningen, Germany, he went to the U.S. in 2013 and applied for an exchange to a North American country. When Trump was elected, his parents didn鈥檛 want him to go there. So he went to Assiniboia.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a smaller community, but everybody鈥檚 very open, very friendly. Canadians are very honest and tell you if they have a problem with you or if there鈥檚 something they like about you,鈥 he said. 鈥淓verybody knows everybody in Assiniboia and it鈥檚 very awesome there.鈥

Schwamborn likes the high school there, getting involved in a sport he never tried before: football. 鈥淚 never played Canadian football before in Germany,鈥 he said. 鈥淲hen I applied and got my district and my town, the husband of my counsellor聽 texted me and said I had to try football because we鈥檙e short of players and needed me to get a team together.鈥

Schwamborn played the entire season and then was chosen to play with the 小蓝视频 Saskatchewan Selects. He will be playing in a tournament in Texas in February against Canadian, American and Mexican teams.

Schwamborn had advice for any future exchange student candidates. 鈥淒on鈥檛 think about the school you鈥檒l miss. It鈥檚 definitely worth it. It improves your language skills immensely. It鈥檚 an awesome time. You鈥檒l make new friends and you鈥檒l learn a lot.鈥
