WEYBURN - The Estevan Bruins have won the inaugural Highway 39 Cup.
Estevan shut out the Weyburn Red Wings 7-0 Saturday night in Weyburn to sweep the best-of-three challenge issued by Estevan Police Chief Richard Lowen and his counterpart from Weyburn, Jamie Blunden.
The Bruins won a trophy, and now Blunden will have to wear a Bruins’ jersey for a day while on the job.
Alex Von Sprecken opened the scoring for Estevan with 6:01 to play in the first period. Kade Runke doubled the lead with a goal 5:15 into the middle frame.
Weyburn had a chance to cut into the lead with a power play late in the second, but it would be the Bruins who would strike twice, with Cody Davis and Eric Pearce scoring short-handed goals 33 seconds apart for a 4-0 Bruin lead.
Defenceman Kian Calder scored twice in the third for the Bruins, and Mark Rumsey rounded out the scoring late in the frame.
Cam Hrdlicka made 22 saves for the Bruins to get the shutout victory. Jackson Fellner made 41 saves for Weyburn.
It was the final game for both teams before the Christmas break.
The Bruins took Game 1 5-0 Wednesday night in Estevan.
Estevan and Weyburn will meet again on Dec. 30 in Estevan at 7 p.m. Then they will have their annual New Year’s Day clash in Weyburn, starting at 7:30 p.m.
