Elecs clinch home playoff game with win over Colts

The ECS Elecs used a 20-0 halftime lead to hang on for a 30-22 victory over the Swift Current Colts on Thursday. The win guarantees the Elecs (2-3) fourth place and the right to host their quarter-final game against the Colts (0-5) on Oct. 18.

The ECS Elecs used a 20-0 halftime lead to hang on for a 30-22 victory over the Swift Current Colts on Thursday.

The win guarantees the Elecs (2-3) fourth place and the right to host their quarter-final game against the Colts (0-5) on Oct. 18.

"They didn't have an offensive touchdown for those first three quarters, they didn't have many plays at all that were very successful for them, so for the most part I thought our defence came out real strong," said Elecs head coach Marco Ricci.

Dustin MacCuish got Estevan on the board with a 10-yard running major midway through the first quarter. On the last play of the quarter, a botched snap on a Colts punt attempt rolled into the end zone and Elecs kicker Kyle Hovind fell on the ball for a touchdown.

"He seems to work real hard at the special teams part of it, so it was just fitting that he ends up scoring a touchdown on a special teams play," said Ricci.

Tyler Hodgson punched in a third touchdown from the one-yard line to give the Elecs a 20-0 lead at the half.

Swift Current got on the board when the Elecs recovered a fumble at the Colts' 15, only to fumble it right back on the next play. The Colts returned the ball all the way back to make it 20-7.

ECS followed that up with a Jaren Prokop kick return to the Colts' 29, setting up a 35-yard field goal by Hovind.

The Elecs added to their lead midway through the fourth when Kolby Fleury connected on a 20-yard pass to Bucky Strongeagle.

As the ECS injuries began to pile up, the Colts scored two touchdowns in the last two minutes, on passing plays of nine and 12 yards.
