After consulting with physicians and therapists, Canadian golfer Graham DeLaet, a native of Weyburn, has made the difficult decision to take several more weeks off the PGA Tour to continue to rehabilitate his back with no set timetable for a return.
DeLaet suffered from a bulging disc in 2010 which became herniated. After surgery in January and several months of exercise, therapy and rehab, DeLaet returned to the PGA Tour in June but soon realized his back was not yet 100 percent.
Rather than risk further injury, DeLaet will take the necessary time to continue his rehab and strengthen his back.
"I am really disappointed my back is not further along and was truly hoping I would be able to play the RBC Canadian Open," said DeLaet. "My long-term progress was the main consideration when making this decision.More rehab is needed in order to get completely healthy."
If DeLaet is unable to return to the PGA Tour this season he would have playing privileges for 2012 via a Major Medical Extension that allows for up to 28 starts, two of which he used this season at the FedEx St. Jude Classic and the Travelers Championship.
DeLaet turned professional in 2006. His corporate support team includes Titleist, RBC, Transitions Optical, J. Lindeberg, Tim Horton's and Oakley.
DeLaet will be in Weyburn for the Graham DeLaet Charity Golf Tournament in support of the Weyburn and district Hospital Foundation on July 27.
