A charity golf tournament will be held at the Weyburn Golf Course in the summer of 2011, featuring former Weyburn local Graham DeLaet, who is currently in his first year as a rookie on the Professional Golf Association tour. All funds from the tournament will be donated to the Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation Inc., and used as the building fund towards the future construction of a new hospital to serve the needs of Weyburn and surrounding areas.I am very excited about the opportunity to not only come home, but I am also looking forward to raising much-needed funds for the Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation, said DeLaet. He announced the charity golf tournament during a media teleconference in Weyburn on Tuesday morning. This really is an exciting opportunity for me to give back to the community that gave me so much and has supported me over the years as I worked my way onto the PGA tour, added DeLaet. My hope is that the community embraces this event and that together we are able to raise significant dollars for this very worthy foundation. The events of the Graham DeLaet Charity Golf Tournament will include a breakfast which will be open to the public; a junior golf clinic to be put on by Graham in conjunction with the Weyburn Golf Course pro Dean Toles; the golf tournament at which DeLaet will be hitting a tee shot on the long par five 10th hole for each team; and a supper which will be followed by both a silent and live auction. We are also pleased to announce that Sysco Regina has agreed to provide us with the expertise of their in-house chefs to help with the planning, preparation and serving of the meals at this event, said Mike Hoffman, chairperson of the golf tournament committee. We are excited to have them on board in the initial stages of our event to help ensure the success of the tournament. We are also happy to announce that locally-owned and operated Panther Drilling has agreed to be one of the first sponsors for the tournament, added Hoffman. We are very excited that they have taken the initiative to step up and help kick start the drive for sponsors for the tournament.Additional sponsor packages will be mailed out at the end of the month, with golf tournament committee establishing registration forms and funds in the next month or so. Interested residents can contact the tournament committee at [email protected] for more information. The Weyburn Review will continue to cover updates to this event. The Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation Inc. has been formed as the fundraising arm for a new Weyburn acute-care hospital. The initial focus of the Foundation is to raise awareness of the need for a new hospital, as well to raise funds to cover 35 per cent of the cost of a new hospital, as mandated by the provincial government. It is estimated that the Foundation will have to fund raise roughly $30 million for the new hospital. Through prior commitments from local governments and other fundraising ventures, the Foundation has in excess of $2 million towards their goal.I am a Weyburn guy through and through. Even though I no longer live in Weyburn, it will still be my home, added DeLaet. I am very proud to represent a small town like Weyburn on the PGA Tour.DeLaet feels that there are many ways a new hospital could benefit the Weyburn and area. It definitely will create a lot of jobs, and provide sophisticated, top-of-the-line care that will serve the Weyburn and area. For the Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation, this tournament will rank as one of their top fundraisers to date. We are very excited because of all the interest shown in Graham, and feel very lucky and fortunate that he has agreed to this charity tournament, said Hoffman. It will certainly raise awareness about our foundation, and the need for a new hospital. Most tournaments at the Weyburn Golf Course raise in the range of $20,000 to $45,000. Hoffman said, I hope that by bringing in Graham we will raise significantly more than that, and would be disappointed if we raised less than $100,000.
Panther Drilling have agreed to be the sponsors for the Junior Golf Clinic that Graham will be conducting the morning of the tournament. The best advice that DeLaet wanted to pass onto other junior golfers was to dream big and to love the game. You wouldn't think that anyone from Weyburn would be playing on the PGA Tour, but you do have to set yourself some goals. Anyone can reach their goals.I am a Weyburn guy through and through.
