Comp curlers take gold and silver at Provincials

The Weyburn Comprehensive School curling teams have once again dominated the high school curling scene.

The Weyburn Comprehensive School curling teams have once again dominated the high school curling scene. On March 4 and 5 the boys' team captured gold while the girls won silver at the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association Provincial High School Curling Championship in Regina.

The boys' team, skip Brendan Ryan, third Dane Colbow, second Jeff Nikolejsin, and lead Austin Cot, lost their first game to Ile-a-la-Crosse 7-4, won their second game against Saskatoon Walter Murray 9-4, and lost to Saskatoon Holy Cross 8-3 on Friday. On Saturday, the boys beat Meadow Lake 8-7 to qualify for the championship round, where they won 9-8 over Kelliher.

The girls' team, skip Ashley Skjerdal, third Jordan Maas, second Brooke Tokarz and lead Shelby Bendtsen, beat Lanigan 9-3 and Saskatoon 11-6, losing to Watrous, 8-2, in the "A" event on Friday. The girls defeated Regina Campbell 8-2 on Saturday to make it to the championship round against Tisdale, winning 10-4. Weyburn lost to Watrous 9-4 to take silver.

Last year, the Comp girls' team won gold at the provincial contest, as did the boys' team from Assiniboia and the mixed team from Balgonie. Weyburn has won five curling gold medals in this competition since 2004.
