MOOSEJAWTODAY.COM -- The Central Cyclones had to show a bit of resiliency, but in the end they managed to get the job done against the Peacock Toilers in the SHSAA 4A boys provincial championship gold medal game on Saturday afternoon.
After Peacock took a 53-51 lead early in the third quarter, the Cyclones put together a 21-8 run through the next 10 minutes of play and would go on to an 85-69 win in the title contest at Sask Polytech.
Mason Muchowski scored 27 points to lead the offence for Central, who took a 24-20 lead out of the first quarter and led 48-41 at the half. Max Simmons had 24 points for the Cyclones, Chase Seaborn added 20.
Peacock was led by Kai Houghton with 20, while Makungu Mutabazi put down 19 and Luke Andrews added 14.
The gold medal is the fourth straight for Central and their appearance in the final marked the sixth straight time the Cyclones have appeared in the 4A boys gold medal final.
A third-quarter surge proved to be the difference in the 4A girls bronze medal game between the Peacock Toilers and Central Cyclones, with Peacock coming away with a 63-51 win to finish third in the province.
Devlynn McClung had an outstanding game for the Toilers, leading all scorers with 31 points, while Taylor Craik scored eight.
Addison Simpson was Central’s top scorer with a 17-point outing, Lucy McLean scored nine.
Peacock led 13-9 after the first quarter and 28-22 at the half, but an 8-0 run over the final two minutes of the third led to a 51-34 lead heading into the final frame.
There, the Toilers led by 15 to 17 points much of the way before a late run got Central back with 10, but they’d get no closer.
Other scores from the 1:45 p.m. draw Saskatoon Holy Cross take a 97-63 win over Regina O’Neill to win bronze, while the 5A boys consolation game was a barnburner that saw North Battleford edge Regina Campbell 106-105.
The 1A boys bronze medal game was won by Hafford 92-54 over Davidson and Norquay took a 77-44 win over LCBI in the 2A girls bronze game.
Scores from the 3:30 p.m. draw saw Wilkie win the 1A girls provincial title with a 73-40 win over Asquith, Regina Laval down Indian Head 58-50 to win 3A girls bronze and Norquay defeat Preeceville 80-67 for 2A boys bronze.
