ESTEVAN – The Estevan Bruins have drawn even with the Notre Dame Hounds in their best of seven Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League quarter-final series.
Estevan defeated Notre Dame 4-1 in Game 2 Saturday night at Affinity Place.
Mark Rumsey opened the scoring with 8:55 to play in the first period, and doubled the Bruins' advantage with a power-play goal 3:05 into the middle frame.
Notre Dame notched their only goal of the game 3 1/2 minutes after Rumsey's second, on a goal by Elliot Dutil.
Eric Pearce scored on a power play midway through the second period, and Kade Runke finished the scoring with the teams playing four-on-four with 87 seconds remaining in the period.
Emotions flared late in the second period and into the third. At one point late in the middle frame, the Bruins had five players in the penalty box and the Hounds had four.
Twenty-seven of the 31 penalties on the night occurred in the second half of the game.
Rumsey and Kevin Anderson, the top scorers for the Bruins and Hounds, respectively, in the regular season, engaged in a lengthy scrap midway through the third period that generated in a rousing ovation from the 1,191 fans in attendance.
Boston Bilous stopped 15 shots for Estevan, while Austin Elliot made 35 saves for Notre Dame.
Game 3 will be Tuesday night in Wilcox at 7:30 p.m.
