Bruins beat up Hounds in pre-season finale

The Estevan Bruins closed out their SJHL pre-season slate with a 7-1 victory over the Notre Dame Hounds on Tuesday night at Spectra Place.

The Estevan Bruins closed out their SJHL pre-season slate with a 7-1 victory over the Notre Dame Hounds on Tuesday night at Spectra Place.

Ryan Ostertag, making his return from migraines caused by a viral infection, scored twice to pace the home side.

Cole Olson, Chris Daniels, Jesse Bernard, Dylan Smith and Calder Neufeld had the other Estevan goals. Mitch Boucher had the Hounds' lone tally early in the third period.

The Bruins outshot the Hounds 34-27, with Steven Glass making 26 saves for the victory. Matthew Smidt and Ty Reichenbach split the duties for Notre Dame.

The Bruins led 2-0 after the first period and 5-0 after the second.

The contest had its share of feisty undertones, including a fight between Smith and Dillon Schwartzenberger. The Bruins' star forward won the tilt handily and both were tossed from the game.

"You saw a lot of guys step into different roles tonight. You saw Smitty sticking up for one of his teammates out there, (Eric) Baldwin standing up for one of his teammates as well," said Bruins head coach Keith Cassidy. "That's a sign that a team likes playing for one another and I couldn't be happier about that."

The Bruins open up on Saturday against the Melville Millionaires in the first regular season game to be played at Spectra Place.
