The annual July road trip through Alberta has proven to be the Weyburn Beavers undoing the last couple of years, as the club has struggled to win a game on those jaunts.
But Weyburn managed two wins in their first three games in Alberta this year, and they squandered a late lead in their defeat.
Weyburn opened the road trip with a 4-0 win over the Medicine Hat Mavericks on July 5. Local product Jon Neuberger paced the Beavers with four singles, two runs batted in and a pair of stolen bases. The Beavers stole seven bases in the game.
Alex Gale pitched a complete game, three-hit shutout.
Weyburn scored four times in the first inning July 6 in Medicine Hat. But the Mavericks scored four times in the eighth inning, thanks to a two-out grand slam home run that followed an error by the Beavers. Medicine Hat scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
Jesse Elam pitched seven-and-two-thirds of an inning. He allowed four runs, but none were earned.
The Beavers scored nine times in the fourth inning en route to a 13-8 win over the host Edmonton Prospects on July 7. Derek Wallace capped the fourth inning with a three-run home run. Seven Weyburn players had at least two hits in the game.
Phil Curtis allowed one run in five innings to get the win.
Weyburn also played in Edmonton on July 8. (Results not available at press time).
The road trip through Alberta capped a stretch of 11 games in nine days for the Beavers. Weyburn lost both ends of a Canada Day double-header against Moose Jaw: 8-2 and 8-4. They split a double-header with Swift Current on July 2, winning 6-3 and losing 11-2. And they lost 6-2 to Melville on July 3.
Weyburn's record, as of July 7, was 10-19. They are three games behind Yorkton for the final playoff spot in the East Division. The Beavers have only 12 games remaining.
The Beavers will host Melville on July 11, and they will visit Yorkton on July 12.
