ARCOLA - This past Saturday, the Arcola Figure Skating Club hosted the annual skating competition for Regions 1 and 6 for Skate Canada - Saskatchewan.

This is a non-profit sport governing body affiliated with and governed by Skate Canada. In Saskatchewan, there are over 8,500 individual members belonging to 122 clubs in the province.

Skate Canada is dedicated to providing competitive opportunities for all skaters, promote the sport and encourage local club participation, and to provide progressive training opportunities for membership development.

This one-day event attracted 80 girls and two boys, ages six to 17,  from all over southeastern Saskatchewan. Communities represented included Arcola, Carlyle, Wawota, Estevan, Oxbow, Whitewood, Moosomin, Indian Head, Pense, Melville, Esterhazy, and Milestone. There were eight provincial judges who graded the skaters both individually and in team events.

Arcola Figure Skating Club president Sarah Rickard was very impressed with the day-long event which went off without a hitch. “To my knowledge, Arcola has not hosted a competition such as this for many years. Attendance was excellent and the local food and figure skating vendors had a great day along with good support for our raffle tables. It was a great day.”

The Arcola Figure Skating Club has only 20 members and it was quite an achievement to receive approval to host a prestigious competition such as this. The entire Prairie Place/skating rink facility was utilized and garnered a lot of positive comments from both fans and out of town skaters.

Trish McNeil is secretary and Tammy Sheridan the treasurer.

Winners from this year’s competition will be posted shortly on the Skate Canada - Saskatchewan website.
