With three more wins over the weekend, the Estevan Apex midget AA Bruins made it eight straight victories. The Bruins got by Melville, the Regina Wild and Weyburn to improve their record to 16-3-1 on the season.
"It wasn't our best weekend of hockey, but when you play three games it becomes a test of your fitness more than playing at your best all the time," said Bruins coach Tom Copeland. "Overall we did what it took to win, and we had some really nice stretches of hockey where we just dominated."
Estevan started their three-game set Friday night on the road in Melville where they doubled up the Millionaires 6-3. The Bruins scored five of their goals in the first period, as Marshall Holzer, Brody Connelly, Dylan Herzberg, Mark Moriarty and Brycen Odgers all bulged the twine in the opening 20 minutes.
Holzer scored his second power play goal of the contest in the second, and that was all Estevan would need, as they breezed to the 6-3 win.
The Bruins returned home to face the Regina Wild on Saturday evening, and used a balanced attack to crush their opponents 9-1, with six of those nine goals coming in the third period.
Leading the way offensively for Estevan was Moriarty with a goal and three assists. Klae Bayda added a pair of goals, while Connelly, Odgers, Holzer, Dylan Lamontagne, Austin Halladay and Garett Earl had the others.
In their third game of the weekend, the Bruins upended the Weyburn Petrobakken Wings 7-2. Dylan Johner led the charge for Estevan with two goals and three assists, while Bayda had one goal and three assists. Other Estevan scorers were Moriarty, Herzberg, Connelly and Jake McMillan.
The Bruins had a strong weekend defensively, only allowing six goals against in three games, and Copeland said ever since their matchup against the Notre Dame Argos at the end of November, they've really been coming around defensively.
"Our defence was OK, for sure. For the most part we're getting great defensive positioning, more so from our forwards, which really helps our young defencemen. And on top of that, we had great goaltending this weekend."
The Bruins are back in action this weekend with two more games. They'll host the Notre Dame Hounds on Saturday at 8 p.m., before heading to Balgaonie to face the Prairie Storm on Sunday at 4:45.
