The Estevan Apex midget AA Bruins were in Swift Current over the weekend for a pair of games against the K-Motel Hurricanes.
The first contest between the two teams was on Friday and saw the Bruins double-up the Hurricanes 4-2. Klae Bayda scored in the first period and Dylan Johner followed suit in the second to give Estevan a 2-0 lead heading into the third.
Brody Connelly made it 3-0 in the final frame, before Swift Current came back with two markers of their own to get within one. That was as close as they would come however, as Johner added an empty net goal to give the Bruins the 4-2 win. Tyler Myers earned the victory in goal.
The Hurricanes got their revenge on Saturday, handing Estevan a 5-2 loss. After a scoreless first period, Swift Current opened up a 3-1 lead in the second. The two clubs traded goals in the third to make it 4-2, before the Hurricanes added an empty netter with nine seconds remaining.
Johner and Marshall Holzer were the scorers for the Bruins, while Nate Ferris took the loss in net. The defeat was Bruins' first since November 5, ending their 20 game winning streak.
"We didn't play very well on Saturday," said Bruins head coach Tom Copeland. "We didn't quite get the goal scoring. If we had a couple breaks go our way, then that game goes a lot differently, but it didn't happen and sometimes that's the way hockey works."
While you never like to lose, Copeland admits his team was probably due for a loss and is glad it came in a regular league contest, as opposed to a provincial game.
"Absolutely, and Swift Current's got a good club," he said. "They've got great defencemen and it's tough to score on them."
Next up for the Bruins is a date with the Pipestone Valley Jets in Whitewood Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Estevan will then be back at home this weekend for a pair of contests with the Yorkton Kinsmen Terriers at the Civic. The first game is Saturday at 8 p.m., while the second will be Sunday at 3:45 p.m.
Estevan's next provincial matchup will be with the Notre Dame Argos, however no dates have been set as of yet.
