It was a tale of two teams for the Estevan Apex Bruins on the weekend.
The midget AA squad defeated the Notre Dame Argos 5-1 in a road game Friday, then lost 3-2 to the Weyburn Wings Saturday at Spectra Place.
On Saturday, Weyburn's Braden Mellon scored the winner with 6:38 remaining, taking a pass in the slot right off a faceoff and burying it past Bruins goalie Cody Murray.
Steven Henderson scored twice for the Bruins, both coming in the second period, with Lyndon Lumb and Jack Carleton adding Weyburn's other goals.
Bruins head coach Tim Lequyer said his team failed to build on Friday's win despite coming out strong in the first period.
"We did have a very good first period, which carried on from (Friday) in Notre Dame. We might have had one of our better games all year (against the Argos) as far as puck possession and puck movement and attacking with speed.
"(On Saturday), we only had that for a third of the game. That's what our game is and when we don't do it, we're going to struggle to win."
Henderson opened the scoring at the 2:38 mark of the second when a rebound squirted out of the pads of Weyburn goalie Terrick Wilderman and onto his stick for a tap-in.
Lumb tied it five minutes later with a shot that beat Murray blocker side. The Wings took their first lead with two minutes left in the period on a wraparound by Carleton.
"We did have lots of chances. You gotta give Weyburn's goalie credit. He stood his ground and was square to the puck all the time and made some timely saves for them," said Lequyer.
"As frustrating as it is to lose, I think it's a good reminder of where we're at and how close our league is and how some of the little things that kids aren't doing right can come (back) to haunt us, as evidenced by the third goal."
Friday's game was a tune-up for the Bruins' upcoming second round provincial series against the Argos.
"We did play really well and we wanted to set a bit of a tone against them. I know they're not going to be a pushover. It's going to be a close series and we're going to have to earn every inch we get there," said Lequyer.
That series begins tonight in Wilcox. The second game is next Friday in Estevan.
