Annual Wawota Lions quad derby is fast approaching

The annual Wawota Lions quad derby is coming up in the early weeks of April, and this year promises to be a blockbuster event.

With more than 500 rider attending the event in 2010, event organizer Tim Hamilton says that interest in this year's event has been significant.

"We've had a lot of queries from people about the rally this year," Hamilton said. "I think this is going to shape up to be a great year for the rally."

The Wawota Lions Club, which runs the derby, traditionally donates all the money raised through the event to a good cause in the community, and this year will be no different.

One-third of the money raised will be donated to the Wee Welcome Daycare Centre in Wawota; a third will be donated to the Community Forum; and the final third will be donated to Levi Petterson, who is in need of special dental surgery that is not covered by the provincial health plan.

"We don't start registering riders until a day or two before the event," Hamilton said. "But we want everyone to know they're welcome to come out and join us for a fun day on the trails."

Registration for the event will cost $10 for each rider and guest.

There will be a payout of 50 percent of the registration income, with first place in the draw taking 25 percent, second place taking 15 percent, and third taking 10 percent.

There will also be a silent hands hold which will cost $5 to enter, with the same payout structure as above.

"It is a great day out," Hamilton explained. "We have more than 22 miles of trail through varied landscape for riders to enjoy, and we have a lunch stop set up on the trail for registered riders."

Prizes for this year's event riders have been donated by recreation motor sports dealers throughout the region.

"The Wawota Lions would like to invite all quadders to come and take part in one of the biggest and best events of the year," Hamilton said. "It's a chance to get out, get some fresh air, see some beautiful scenery and terrain, and to meet other enthusiasts.

The annual derby will be held on Sat. April 14th, with events kicking off at 10 a.m.

Registration, along with route and map information for the event, can be gotten at the Wawota Community Forum on derby day.
