The people of Weyburn will join with the people of Chile to pray on March 4, World Day of Prayer. The local World Day of Prayer service will be held at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church at 10 a.m.and everyone is invited to this ecumenical service.

Similar services will be conducted by various local denominations for the residents of senior care homes throughout Weyburn in the afternoon.

Each year the service is written by the residents of a different country. This year's service was prepared by the women of the Republic of Chile.

On February 27, 2010, Chile was assaulted by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake in the Maule region. The effects of the quake, measuring almost two points higher than the one that devastated Haiti just six weeks before, were felt across Chile.

Since the quake, a group of Chileans have formed a not-for-profit group called "Rebuild Chile." Their goal is to rebuild homes, schools, and the Chilean marketplace itself through the help of skilled workers and volunteers.

As well, Chile's incidence of violence against women is among the highest in Latin America. As of February 10, six women were killed at the hands of their husbands or boyfriends.

World Day of Prayer (WDP) participants this year will be praying and acting in solidarity with all the people of Chile.By participating in this year's service, worshippers are joining with Christians around the world and in more than 2,000 communities across Canada.

In Canada, the WDP is coordinated by the Women's Inter-Church Council of Canada. From offerings received during WDP services across Canada, grants are provided to various projects throughout the world.

In Saskatchewan, $5,000 was given to "Women Empowering Women" (Women of the Dawn Counselling Centre) last year from funds raised during WDP services.
