The Weyburn Comprehensive School (WCS) held their 48th annual Awards Night on August 31 for the 2009/2010 school year, with several students and graduates taking home trophies, medals and bursaries.
Graduate Mitch McCallum came away with several awards including the T.C. Douglas Medal for highest Grade 12 average (98.3 percent), R.C. Smith General Proficiency Award, Governor General Award and medals for math, physics and band. He received three bursaries totalling $3,000.
The highest Grade 10 average went to Dayna Hayes and Raquel Bellefleur (93.8 percent) and Thomas Carleton (94.4 percent). The highest Grade 11 average went to Anita Lazurko (98.3 percent) and Justin Hippe (96.9 percent).
Graduate Kate Andrews earned a T.C. Douglas Medal for her 95.3 percent average in Grade 12. She also earned the WCS student scholarship with Katie Lee, each earning $1,000. Lee also received a medal in chemistry.
The Valedictorian Award went to Gene Irwin. Irwin was also acknowledged for participating in the Rotary Exchange for the 2010/2011 year, along with Kate Andrews. Irwin will travel to Germany and Andrews will go to Brazil for one year.
Other subject medals awarded: Erin Sidloski got the University Women's Club Art Award and Kelsey Ermel received the Club's French Award; Deborah Nikkel: art, English, and social studies; Dustin DeVries: CPT and cosmetology; Candace Funk: accounting and drafting; Claudia Harry: enterpreneurship; Raquel Dimmick: French and biology; Laurae McIvor: home economics; Marc Henderson received a medal for boys physical ed. while Brett Schmidt earned the girls medal; Brenna Moser: choral; Jesse Storle: construction; Thomas Martin: welding; Robert Pineo: mechanics; Blair Gaab: machining; and Chris Szabo: electronics.
Several scholarships and bursaries were also awarded during the evening.
