Monday, March 21st, was to be the start of a new season in Carlyle. The spring equinox, which occurred late Sunday evening, ensured the beginning of warmer weather. Or did it?
Monday included snow and weather warnings that cancelled events and made driving on highways treacherous. This was followed by a blustery Tuesday with continued snow, weather warnings and school buses failing to run. Is this the spring that we expected?
Probably. Living in the Prairie provinces means living with an abundance of snowfall, sometimes even more months of the year than we really desire. This year has been no different. According to Environment Canada's closest weather station, Carlyle has received almost twice as much snowfall as last year. Last year, from October 2009 to March 2010, the community received 80 cm of snowfall. This year's statistics, as of March 23, was that of 141.4 cm of snowfall.
Whether or not spring is really upon is, is yet to be seen. If last year's data is any indication, Carlyle can expect a few more centimeters of snowfall within the next month. But one thing is for sure, if spring is not here right now, it is just around the corner.
