Internationally-known sculptor Lea Vivot paid her first visit to Weyburn on Tuesday, as she came to unpack her bronze statue of the late Tommy Douglas.
Internationally-known sculptor Lea Vivot paid her first visit to Weyburn on Tuesday, as she came to unpack her bronze statue of the late Tommy Douglas.The statue had been shipped to the city a few weeks ago, but it came with the request from the artist that it not be unwrapped until she could be present to see it.Meantime, she met with city media at the new location for the Douglas statue, beside the boardwalk near the Souris River, so she could see where her statue will be installed.The statue is her gift to the City of Weyburn, and the city was responsible for the costs of installation and care of the statue; an ad hoc committee took on the project, and the funds have been raised to cover the statues installation. As of Tuesday, no date had been set for the official unveiling of the statue.Vivot is a native of Czechoslovakia, and she escaped from that country in 1968 to the west, and took schooling as a sculptor; today, she works in Canada, Mexico and the Czech Republic, and her work is in homes and galleries around the world. In 2003, Vivot received an award as the Most Distinguished Czech Woman in the World.
