REGINA — Members of the legislative assembly returned to session Monday, with the provincial government’s first motion on the floor one of support for Ukraine.
Premier Scott Moe introduced the motion, which states that the Saskatchewan assembly “expresses unwavering support for Ukraine’s people, sovereignty and territorial integrity” and “condemns Russia’s wholly unprovoked and wanton invasion.”
The motion also calls for Russia to cease military operations and withdraw from Ukraine immediately.
"Saskatchewan stands united with the people of Ukraine," said Moe. “Democracy and freedom are under attack and it is our hope that the whole world will stand up to Russia and say no."
The government is seeking unanimous support of the motion, which follows announcements last week that the province will be looking to support Ukrainian refugees seeking entry to Saskatchewan.
Minister of Immigration and Career Training Jeremy Harrison said on Friday that he had spoken to federal counterpart Sean Fraser, minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship, about Saskatchewan’s desire to assist Ukrainian refugees.
"Ukrainians will find a welcoming environment in our communities, including many residents with the same culture and language, which will assist in ensuring long-term success with resettlement in Saskatchewan," said Harrison.
The provincial government has pledged funding support for the coordination of community settlement efforts, though did not provide a figure for that funding.
Applications from Ukrainian citizens received by the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nomination Program will also be prioritized, Harrison reiterated following a previous announcement earlier in the week.
