Sometime between Friday night, May 25th and early Sunday morning, May 27th, vandals 'struck' a children's play park in the very heart of Rockglen, tearing down the complete south west chain link fence, some 80 feet in length. The Kinsmen Park was designed to help protect young children and their guardians who regularly visit and play there. Damage appears to be extensive to the vandalized park. Several residents, who live nearby, were out of town while this act of vandalism occurred, and were shocked to witness the damage when they returned home.
Assiniboia RCMP visited the scene Sunday evening, doing an extensive and thorough investigation, taking photos, and interviewing nearby residents who might have witnessed this senseless act of vandalism. Constable Mark Dijkstra from the Assiniboia detachment of the RCMP observed that there were no vehicle tracks in the park, so no apparent 'mechanical means' were used to perpetrate the damage. The RCMP investigation continues.
Former mayor Richard (Dick) Prefontaine, who also scrutinized the damage during the RCMP investigation, was bewildered with the whole disturbing situation. He noted that Rockglen's high school graduation ceremonies were held Friday night in town, and that a 'wet' grad party was held after the ceremonies and another also on Saturday night.
Whether or not the damage to the children's park was caused as a result of excessive alcohol consumption, has yet to be determined.
