REGINA — The Regina Police Service shared this week that a mandatory vaccination policy is in place for both civilian and sworn members of the service, to a positive response from the workforce.
Beginning earlier this month on Oct. 4, all RPS employees have been required to either submit to regular rapid tests at the beginning of their work week or provide proof of full vaccination against COVID-19.
“Almost 90 per cent of our employees, both civilian and sworn, have been fully vaccinated, with two more patrol shifts starting their work week this weekend,” said the RPS, on Thursday.
This exceeds the current provincial rate of vaccination, which hovers at 63 per cent of the population having received both doses of a vaccine.
It also clears the current percentage of vaccination for the city of Regina, which is at 65 per cent fully vaccinated and 71 per cent with one dose.
“The commitment to reduce the impact of COVID-19 on our workplace, and the community we serve, has been consistent,” said the RPS.
RPS said the decision to implement a firm proof of vaccination policy with service members was made in consultation with the Regina Police Association, as well as with other municipal police services and the Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police.
“Extensive legal consultation was part of this process to ensure compliance with the law and conformity with other employers across the province,” said the RPS.
RPS staff have also implemented several other safety practices since the beginning of the pandemic, including the addition of PPE to standard patrol gear when recommended.
Currently, all staff inside the RPS building are required to wear face masks when in meetings, and anyone visiting police headquarters are asked to also wear masks and answer a standard COVID questionnaire.
