NORTH PORTAL — Saskatchewan RCMP say that as demonstrations are expected to occur this weekend at the North Portal and Northgate points of entry at the Canadian border with the United States they are committed to working with any involved parties to minimize the impact on the traveling public.
Thursday, a media release from Saskatchewan RCMP encouraged the public to check for road closure information and monitor local media for information and alternate routes.
“Demonstrations may interrupt the normal flow of traffic,” stated the release. “Our objective in policing any demonstrations this weekend is to work to restore the orderly flow of traffic in the safest manner possible.”
The release said RCMP always "prefer using communication and a measured response."
“We are making extensive efforts to engage with all stakeholders before and during the demonstrations to ensure everyone involved is aware of the current legal boundaries of a peaceful and lawful protest.”
The release indicated demonstrators without access to a staging area on private land will be turned away. It went on to say Saskatchewan RCMP officers have been and will continue to distribute these details to the gathered demonstrators.
Local residents will notice an increased police presence as RCMP review and assess any ongoing situations.
To ensure the safety of police officers and the public, RCMP will not be disclosing any operational details.
