REGINA — The city of Regina is sending a message to local residents that now is the time to band trees. According to the city’s news release, banding elms, Manitoba maples and fruit trees in the fall helps reduce cankerworms the following spring.
Banding trees each spring and fall, the keeps the community green and attractive and reduces the need for spraying, the city says.
“Tree banding is a pesticide-free, inexpensive and highly effective way to stop cankerworms from laying their eggs in the tree's crown,” the city states. “By stopping one adult cankerworm from laying eggs, tree banding can prevent up to 400 larvae.”
The city also notes that In 2022, they sprayed approximately 11,000 trees for cankerworms. In the past, the City has sprayed upwards of 30,000 trees. For instructions on how to band trees see the link at .
