Last year, the Assiniboia and District Historical Society created a new display called the Barn Room. The museum also acquired a horse statue for the display. This fall, the museum鈥檚 board wanted to give the children of the community a chance to participate in naming the horse.
A contest was set up to include the students from Seventh Avenue School and Assiniboia Elementary School. The rules for the naming contest were simple. Participants were asked to submit their names for the horse. Contestants also had to explain their reasons for giving the horse a particular name.
Once all the entries were submitted, the board had the difficult task of choosing a winner from many excellent submissions.
The successful proposal was made by Keatin Fischer 鈥 a Grade 7 student from Assiniboia Elementary School. She submitted the name Golden Flaxseed along with Phoenix as an alternative choice. She explained the name Golden Flaxseed represented the area and was a good match for the horse.
鈥淚 would like to name the horse either Golden Flaxseed or Phoenix,鈥 Keatin wrote. 鈥淭he reason I want to name the horse Golden Flaxseed, is because the horse is yellow and Golden Flaxseed has a nice ring to it. Also, because it (the name) resembles our town of Assiniboia.鈥澛犅
Shirley Scott, the President of the Assiniboia and District Historical Society, presented a certificate to Keatin at an assembly on Thursday, November 21 at the Assiniboia Elementary School. A small plaque will be placed in the Barn Room, giving Keatin credit for inventing the horse鈥檚 name.
