Feeling frisky in the frost?

Some call winter the 'long, quiet season.' Others have referred to it as 'the big sleep.

Some call winter the 'long, quiet season.' Others have referred to it as 'the big sleep.' Still others refer to it with statements like, 'I hate winter!'

Whether you love it or hate it, winter is here to stay for at least a while longer, so why not make the best of it?

In a community minded effort to help alleviate the worst of the winter ennui, Bear Claw Casino and Hotel will be hosting what might be the first annual snow drag races.

Not a contest between cross-dressing snowmen, but rather a competition of mechanical muscle, as souped-up and stock snowmobiles are raced in order to determine which is the fastest.

Run under the auspices of the Saskatchewan Snowmobile Racing Association, the event is scheduled to take place on the shoreline of Kenosee Lake on Sunday, Feb. 13, beginning at 11 a.m.

"The Bear Claw Casino and Hotel has partnered up with the Moose Mountain Snowmobile Club and the Saskatchewan Snowmobile Racing Association (SSRA) to bring the races here," said Sean Choo-Foo of the Bear Claw Casino and Hotel. "Registrations will be taken between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. on the morning of the races, in the lobby of the casino."

With four classifications of contestants, the races promise to be an impressive display of a wide variety of snowmobiles.

"The classes that'll be open for the race are stock, improved stock, pro stock, and open mod," Choo-Foo said. "Each of the classes has certain engine size rules too, so there should be quite a selection of machines at the race."

With an already large following that continues to grow, snowmobile drag racing has proven to be an exciting winter sport that appeals on many different levels.

The SSRA was founded in 1967, and functions to ensure that the sport of snowmobile drag racing is safe, fair and fun for everyone who takes part in SSRA events.

The Moose Mountain Snowmobile Club will be providing support for the event by grooming the 660-foot track on which the races will be run.

Bear Claw Casino will be providing concessions on-site, and there will be a banquet at the casino once the races are done for registered participants.

Registration for the event will cost $20, and the dinner banquet is included in the fee.

All spectators who attend the race, and are age 19-years or older, will receive a complimentary coupon good for $10 in coin for use at the Bear Claw Casino and Hotel.
