It is that time of year again. Time for the fourth annual Creative Tables for Cancer. This year's event will be held Thursday, Oct. 6 at Arcola Prairie Place.
This year is guaranteed to be a hit once again. With only 320 tickets available, tickets are selling quickly and organizer Darlene Olsen says the evening is well on its way to selling out for the third year in a row.
For those that have never been before, the concept is quite simple. Creative Tables for Cancer has two hostesses for each table of eight. The hostesses, selected by the organizing committee beforehand, are responsible for decorating the tables and bringing desserts for their respective table, in addition to serving the table during the supper portion of the evening.
"It is a lot of fun," said Olsen. The tables are amazing. The hostesses do an incredible job really. The ideas that come out of the evening are just fantastic."
So what exactly are the themes this year you ask? Well, you will have to show up to find out. Past themes have included Coca-Cola, Hawaiian, Safari, Roughriders, Halloween, Harley Davidson and Red Hat Ladies to name a few.
Olsen, who is a volunteer for the Look Good Feel Better program, thought of the idea years ago. With the help of volunteers, she was able to organize the evening into what would become a yearly event.
The money raised from the evening has typically gone to the Look Good Feel Good program. Look Good Feel Better is a charity dedicated to empowering women to manage the effects of cancer and its treatments. This year, the money will be split between the Look Good Feel Good program and a shelter for abused women in Saskatchewan.
In addition to a superb supper, those in attendance will be treated to an evening of entertainment with country and western recording artist Sheila Deck. There will also be a number of raffles and a silent auction.
One of the highlights of the evening is most definitely the guest speaker. Olsen said, "We have a guest speaker, Dionne Warner. I know her, and I have heard her speak before. She is an absolutely fantastic speaker. Her and her husband are coming, in addition to the author of the book that has been written about her." Warner is a seven-time cancer survivor who has stage four cancer.
While the evening has become sort-of a ladies night out, Olsen states that it was never intended to be strictly for females. "This year, because of our speaker, I would really encourage men to come. It's sort of become a ladies night out type-of-thing, but I never started it out that way. And this year, our speaker and her husband will be here. This woman, who is 42, has had seven runs with cancer ever since she was 25 or so. She is an incredible speaker and I really feel as though it would be beneficial for men to hear her speak. I mean they are affected by breast cancer as well. Their moms have it, their wives have it, their sister has it, I mean, they are surrounded by it."
Doors open at 5 p.m. and ticket holders are encouraged to get there sooner than later. "I always recommend that people come early, as soon after 5 p.m. as they can," said Olsen. "The whole idea of Creative Tables for Cancer is to be able to walk around and look at all of the tables." Supper is served at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are a mere $30 for an evening packed full of fun, laughter, celebration, and entertainment. So grab your friends and get your tickets before it's too late.
