Students at the Weyburn Comprehensive School will have the opportunity to hear from a former Canadian heavyweight boxing champion whose life was devastated by drugs and alcohol abuse.
Retired boxer George Chuvalo will be at the school on September 23 to discuss the affects of drugs and alcohol on his family's life. He will also be doing similar presentations at Midale, Oxbow, Lampman and Estevan schools.
Local resident Ross Fenwick has been working in conjunction with Mike Lee and Mike Mainil to bring Chuvalo to Weyburn. Fenwick said it wouldn't have been possible without sponsors Panther Drilling, Gerry Mainil Ltd., Caprice Resources and Valleyview Petroleums Ltd.
Chuvalo will speak to students about how he struggled with drug and alcohol abuse and lost three sons and his wife to drugs and suicide. He has spoken-out against drug and alcohol abuse since 1995, making over 1,000 appearances in Canada and the United States.
Chuvalo developed the Fight Against Drugs program, which encourages youth to make healthy choices. Chuvalo earned the Order of Canada in 1998 for his efforts.
