Two members of council met with White Bear First Nations last week to discuss employment opportunities. The preliminary meeting is hoped to establish a partnership between the two entities. One of the challenges the groups are addressing within the partnership is the availability of transportation.
Discussion regarding street repair continues. The town has prioritized Seventh Street and Carlyle Avenue to be fixed, followed by other areas that are deemed necessary as budget allows. The town has budgeted $90,000 for contracted road repairs for the current year. Council has also decided to repair the sidewalk by the nursing home. Work is anticipated to begin during the month of August.
The library will be open for an additional two hours per week, meaning a total of 25 hours per week. The town of Carlyle requested funding from the R.M. of Moose Mountain in order to joint share the costs required for the additional hours. Patrons of the library reside both within the town of Carlyle and the surrounding rural municipalities. The rural municipality has contributed some funding.
The town of Carlyle and the R.M. of Moose Mountain are currently in preliminary annexation discussions. The municipality and the council have both established committees of three members each. The discussions are preliminary as town council addresses the potential lack of town land in future years.
At this point in time, there have been no water updates. Residents should be aware that the boil water advisory is still on. While the new well that the town has installed is now connected, the water is still not in the system. Due to this and a high level of water consumption in the town of Carlyle, the town has to work off of well number two. This well, which is high in iron and minerals, means that the boil water advisory must remain in effect. The town will notify its residents by posters when the boil water advisory is removed.
Discussion regarding whether out-of-town businesses are required to have business licenses occurred. Residents are reminded that door-to-door salespeople are required to have a permit and should be able to show you their permit.
Town council approved the special events permit for the RCMP Reunion and the Carlyle and District Sink or Swim event.
